Building a home gym: equipment by budget
You can train seriously in a small space on a tight budget. This is the list in real priority order.
A home gym does not need to look like a commercial floor. It needs to let you push, pull, hinge, squat and carry, with room to progress for years. Everything else is expensive decoration.
By budget
| Budget | Purchase | What it unlocks |
|---|---|---|
| Minimal | Resistance bands + mat | Early strength, mobility, travel |
| Low | Pull-up bar + pair of dumbbells | Full upper body and leg basics |
| Medium | Adjustable dumbbells + adjustable bench | A complete hypertrophy programme |
| High | Olympic barbell + plates + rack + flooring | Long-term strength with no ceiling |
Recommended buying order
- Adjustable dumbbells: the most versatile piece per euro and per square metre.
- Adjustable bench: multiplies the exercises available with dumbbells.
- Doorway or wall-mounted pull-up bar.
- Rubber protective flooring if you will drop weight or live in a flat.
- Rack and Olympic barbell only if you have the space and want heavy loads.
Real minimum space
For comfortable dumbbell and bench work you need about 2 x 2 metres clear. For a rack and barbell, 2.5 x 2.5 metres and 2.4 metres of ceiling if you plan standing overhead presses.
How to avoid regrets
Buy adjustable dumbbells with small increments, a bench with a stable backrest and rubber plates if flooring matters. Cheap multi-station machines usually end up unused.

Training at home unsupervised raises risk when you work close to failure with heavy loads. If you have cardiovascular disease, uncontrolled hypertension or a recent injury, get clearance before starting a strength programme.
Frequently asked questions
- Can you build muscle with just bands and bodyweight?
- Yes for the first months, but you hit a ceiling sooner. Adding external load extends progress a lot.
- Is a treadmill worth it?
- Only if weather or schedule stops you going outside. Walking outdoors is free and usually more sustainable.
